Occupational therapy in Sunninghill & Waterfall
PERSONALISED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY · JOHANNESBURG

Hand & upper-limb therapy.

Hands help us manage the small and essential activities of everyday life, from dressing and cooking to work and hobbies. Pain, injury or loss of movement can make those activities difficult. Occupational hand therapy aims to support practical function while taking your individual circumstances into account.

WHO WE SUPPORT

When might this care help?

A therapist considers the individual circumstances before advising whether a service is suitable. Common reasons for enquiry include:

  • Hand and upper-limb fractures, tendon or nerve injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel and De Quervain conditions
  • Trigger finger, Dupuytren’s contracture, tennis elbow and ganglion cyst-related difficulties
  • Joint pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or gout
  • Severe hand wounds, infections, burns, scar sensitivity and oedema
  • Congenital hand conditions affecting everyday function
OUR APPROACH

What treatment may involve.

Interventions are chosen following an individual assessment. Not every approach is right for every person.

01

Individual assessment

Your therapist considers your injury or condition, relevant medical information and the activities you want to regain.

02

Splints and protection

Where clinically appropriate, soft or rigid splinting may help position, protect or support the hand while rehabilitation progresses.

03

Movement and strength

Therapy may include joint mobilisation, graded activity, strengthening, oedema management and scar care suited to your presentation.

04

Sensation and everyday tasks

Sensory rehabilitation, education and practical strategies may help you return to meaningful daily tasks.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Prepare with confidence.

Bring your doctor or surgeon’s referral when available, relevant imaging reports, and information about any current splints or hand supports. Tell us which daily activities are most difficult.

Sessions are generally about 45 minutes, depending on the clinical situation. Outpatient accounts are typically settled after consultation, and medical-aid reimbursement depends on your scheme and authorisations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions.

Do you only treat injuries after surgery?

No. The practice describes inpatient and outpatient care for a broad range of hand and upper-limb conditions. The appropriate plan is determined following assessment.

Will I need a splint?

Not everyone needs a splint. Your therapist will decide with you whether a support is useful for your particular condition.

Can therapy help me return to work?

Where relevant, treatment may include ergonomics, reasonable accommodations and communication with your employer as part of return-to-work planning.

Therapy recommendations are tailored to each patient following an assessment.
