Functional capacity evaluations.

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a structured assessment intended to describe what a person can do in relation to the physical and, where appropriate, cognitive demands of daily activity and employment. The findings can inform discussions between patients, healthcare professionals, employers and legal representatives.

WHO WE SUPPORT

When might this care help?

A therapist considers the individual circumstances before advising whether a service is suitable. Common reasons for enquiry include:

  • People whose work abilities may have changed after injury, illness or accident
  • Patients referred for return-to-work planning and reasonable accommodations
  • Employers or professionals needing an assessment of functional limitations
  • Legal or non-legal claimants referred for a structured assessment
OUR APPROACH

What treatment may involve.

Interventions are chosen following an individual assessment. Not every approach is right for every person.

01

Structured interview

The evaluation begins by considering your history, roles, work requirements and reported limitations.

02

Observed performance

Standardised and non-standardised tools may be used to observe safe functional activity.

03

WorkWell FCE methodology

The practice describes using the one-day WorkWell FCE version 2, a kinesiophysical protocol that considers movement and task performance.

04

Practical recommendations

Results may help inform suitable work duties, task modifications, ergonomics and further referrals where appropriate.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Prepare with confidence.

Bring the referral and relevant clinical reports, your job description or usual work duties if available, and ask the practice about preparation requirements and assessment duration.

Sessions are generally about 45 minutes, depending on the clinical situation. Outpatient accounts are typically settled after consultation, and medical-aid reimbursement depends on your scheme and authorisations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions.

Is an FCE the same as a medical diagnosis?

No. An FCE documents observed functional performance and limitations; it does not replace a medical diagnosis.

Can an FCE be used for legal matters?

The practice offers evaluations for legal and non-legal purposes. Appropriate instructions, scope and report use should be confirmed first.

Does an evaluation guarantee return-to-work clearance?

No. Findings inform decisions; return-to-work and occupational fitness decisions involve relevant clinical and workplace stakeholders.

Therapy recommendations are tailored to each patient following an assessment.
