Lymphoedema management.

Lymphoedema is swelling caused by changes in lymphatic drainage. Management often involves a combination of techniques and practical self-care. Jane Baker Occupational Therapy provides outpatient support focused on education, function and clinically appropriate swelling management.

WHO WE SUPPORT

When might this care help?

A therapist considers the individual circumstances before advising whether a service is suitable. Common reasons for enquiry include:

  • People referred for primary or secondary lymphoedema management
  • Individuals who need help understanding skin care and exercise for swelling control
  • Patients who may benefit from compression bandaging or garment assessment
  • People whose swelling makes movement, self-care or daily activities more challenging
OUR APPROACH

What treatment may involve.

Interventions are chosen following an individual assessment. Not every approach is right for every person.

01

Assessment and education

We discuss the pattern of swelling, your history and everyday goals, including practical skin care and movement strategies.

02

Manual lymph drainage

Manual lymph drainage (MLD) may be used when clinically indicated as part of a broader treatment plan.

03

Decongestive approaches

Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) may include compression bandaging and carefully selected techniques.

04

Compression garment fitting

The therapist may provide advice or fitting to support consistent compression where this is suitable.

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

Prepare with confidence.

If available, bring your referral, details of existing compression garments and any clinical instructions about your swelling. New or rapidly worsening symptoms need medical assessment rather than website-based advice.

Sessions are generally about 45 minutes, depending on the clinical situation. Outpatient accounts are typically settled after consultation, and medical-aid reimbursement depends on your scheme and authorisations.
